How to choose a power bank for dive trips
On a dive boat, electrical outlets are scarce, shared, and sometimes nonexistent. When your day includes four dives, a drone between immersions, and two strobes to charge in the evening, a power bank stops being an accessory. It becomes your mobile energy infrastructure.
The first criterion is not raw capacity (mAh) but USB-C output power (watts). A modern hybrid camera needs 15 to 30W to charge efficiently. Below that, charging is so slow it cannot offset a full day of intensive use. Check that the power bank supports Power Delivery (PD), not just basic USB-A 5V.
The second criterion is IATA compliance. Above 100 Wh (roughly 27,000 mAh at 3.7V), cabin boarding requires airline approval. Above 160 Wh, it is prohibited. Most 20,000 mAh power banks stay under 100 Wh, but 30,000 mAh models often exceed it.
The third criterion, often overlooked, is resistance to the marine environment. Salt, humidity, splashes on the zodiac: an IP65 or higher power bank survives what your daily trip to the reef throws at it. Unprotected consumer models corrode within a few trips.
